Raven Revealed

Tumultuous screams cut through the air.  Wings dark as nightmares slice through it more.  Orbs of a demon, staring into your soul,  piercing your skin, your muscle, your core.   
A flesh-eating fiend waits, waits, and watches,  as your time on earth ticks, ticks, slips away.  Your body its bread, your blood its wine.  Tonight this fearsome beast will dine.   
This horror, this loathsome black imp  makes your breath quicken, your limbs go limp.  Then a gleam in your tormentor's eyes  makes you look up in shock and surprise.   
As you look past the cloaks and the veils,
I was inspired by the bad rap that ravens and other corvids seem to always get. They are associated with death, darkness, demons, and insanity. Really, though, they are very intelligent birds. They are caring parents, and they mate for life, showing a devotion that many humans do not even show.

I played around quite a bit with rhyme and pattern. I made it symmetrical. The format starts one way, goes down to the middle stanza, and then reverses.

The rhyme is as follows (by stanza):

abab
cdee
ffgg
hhij
klkl

The first half emphasizes the myths, while the second half emphasizes the reality using the same literary devices.

I am a biology student with aspirations of getting into University of Chicago's molecular biosciences PhD program starting the 2011 school year.

I currently work full time as well as going to school full time (Doing 21-30 credit hours a semester to plow right through my degree. It is murder, but it will be worth it.) I also take ballet and horse riding lessons. So time tends to be pretty tight. Thankfully my job often has downtime where I can get some studying in.

I have a 5-year-old bay thoroughbred gelding horse named Tomcat (Tommy).

I am not a great artist (hence coming to DA to attempt to improve my skills), but I have been writing poetry since I was a child.
